Autodesk's Flame 2025 Streamlines Grain Management With A New Node

Flame 2025 release features a brand-new Match Grain node to apply the grain or noise from a clip to your composition and an overhauled Lens Distortion workflow supported by another new STMap node.

Autodesk has launched Flame 2025, an annual release of its VFX and finishing software for node-based compositing, advanced graphics, and color correction.

The most prominent feature of this version is Match Grain, a brand new node to apply the grain or noise from a clip to your composition. It's very simple to use and takes the grain management in Flame to the next level, combining a number of processes. Now you can easily extract grain from the original clip with the ability to adjust RGB curves, dispersion, Scale, Blur, and Gain transforms, and apply the same gain to other clips.

Moving on to the next feature, a new Lens Distortion node is a reworked Lens Distort node with new workflows, controls, and models. Setups from previous Flame versions that you restore in 2025 will be restored with the legacy Lens Distort.

Lens Distortion can be used to distort the clip with a wider range of options, employing either a Lens Grid clip or manually inserted splines. Undistort the footage, output an STMap and Inverse STMap to apply the same undistortion to other clips with the help of a new STMap node.

Highlights include:

  • Import 3DEqualizer Lens Distortion data
  • Selection of multiple distortion models
  • Automatic detection of lines in a Lens Grid or Front clip
  • Selection of the repeat mode
  • Selection of the filtering, including the new Mitchell-Netravali and Catmull-Rom filters
  • Output of a STMap and Inverse STMap to apply the same undistortion to other clips or to apply back the distortion using the STMap node
  • Easy workflow to apply back the distortion with a duplicated Lens Distortion node.

Additionally, the 2025 release got rid of the user profile system with all user-based settings such as preferences, keyboard shortcuts, presets, etc. now stored within the Flame folder.
