Palworld’s developer Pocketpair released a minor update recently, which changes the way players summon owned Pals by throwing Pal Spheres — the mechanic that has been considered a patent infringement of Pokémon by Nintendo.
According to the short patch note of update v0.3.11, player-owned Pals will be summoned near them when the Pal Sphere is held instead of thrown. Yet players can still throw the Sphere to catch new Pals. Though the developer didn’t give a specific reason for this update, the dramatic change could possibly be related to the lawsuit, which was filed in September.

Many players dislike this sudden change because they can no longer decide the position where a Pal should appear by targeting a position before throwing, which used to be a fun and strategic part of the gameplay.
While players express hope that developers can revert the update and bring back the old way, some fans are aware of the possible result of Pocketpair losing the lawsuit— the $66K financial compensation is nothing compared with Palworld being removed from the storefront. Therefore, they’re trying to offer new summoning ideas for developers, like allowing players to shoot Pals to a selected location or using a spell to “cast” a Pal.
While preparing for the troublesome lawsuit with Nintendo, Pocketpair has continued to update Palworld. The game will receive a major update this month, bringing a mysterious island that is the largest event in Palworld’s history, along with a lot of new content. The crossover with Terraria is coming in 2025.
