Unfortunately, it's not surprising.

The recently released Borderlands movie had disappointing box office results and is scheduled to launch on streaming platforms soon.
The movie's box office revenue over the two weeks is considered the worst second-weekend drop in 2024. On the first weekend after the movie's release, which took place on August 9, Borderlands earned $8.8 million in the US, which was only 6% of its overall cost. As of today, the movie got about $13.5 million in the US and about $21 million worldwide. It is estimated to be a 72% decline compared to the first weekend, breaking the record of movies like MaXXXine, with a 69.1% drop, and The Bikeriders, which saw a 65.9% decline.
It is already known that the movie will appear on streaming platforms on August 30, 2024. This is also a sign of the lack of the movie's success, as it has only been three weeks after its release in theatres. For instance, the animated movie Inside Out 2, which turned out to be Pixar's most financially successful movie of 2024 to date, will also appear on streaming platforms this week, but its release was almost two months ago.

The movie was criticized even before its screening in movie theatres. A month before the official release date, industry insider Daniel Richtman said that the movie would not be successful, as he spoke to the viewers who attended the preliminary screening and shared their impressions. After the release, the first reviews of the movie were unconsoling: the viewers described it as cliché, unfunny, and even visually repulsive. Apart from the highly criticized plot and the portrayal of the characters, the movie didn't credit the team responsible for the CG model of Claptrap.
