Bungie Hired Riot Animation Director For Destiny Films and TV

Derick Tsai – League of Legends animation director – was hired by Bungie to adapt the Destiny IP across film, TV, animation, and more formats.

Bungie has officially hired Derick Tsai – the former Animation Director at Riot Games who previously worked on League of Legends animated shorts. The information has appeared on Tsai's Linkedin page. Currently, Tsai holds the position of head of development for Destiny Universe Transmedia.

Apart from Riot Games, Derick Tsai had previously worked on numerous projects across the games industry as well as in the animation and film industries. He worked for such companies as Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Crystal Dynamics, Nike, The Walt Disney Company, HyperX, and Obsidian.

According to Tsai's Linkedin profile, as a part of Bungie, he's going to "extend the Destiny IP into new mediums including Film, TV, Animation, Books, Comics, and Audio formats" meaning that Bungie seriously intended to broaden the Destiny franchise beyond the games.

Bungie hiring Derick Tsai news follows Sony's recent acquisition of the company for $3.6 billion. In an interview with Games Industry, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons shared that with the assistance of Sony, the company intends to take its IP to new entertainment mediums including film and TV. "We saw this great opportunity to build – not just Destiny, we're working on more than Destiny – these great interactive experiences, which we think we're good at. But also being able to explore these worlds even more," said Parsons.
