The Callisto Protocol To Feature Brutal Strategic Combat System

Striking Distance revealed that Callisto Protocol's combat system will mix ranged shooting and brutal melee and presented a new mechanic that turns regular opponents into deadly creatures.

In June, Striking Distance Studios revealed that its survival horror game The Callisto Protocol is scheduled for release on December 2. And now, the developers have shed some light on the upcoming title including new details on the game's combat system and several brand new mechanics.

Striking Distance shared that an innovative strategic combat system has been "a huge focus" for the team with developers aiming to keep the balance between feelings of desperate helplessness and strategic, skill-based gameplay. With this in mind, the studio came up with a combat system that would represent a mix of ranged shooting and brutal melee, with a gravity weapon called the GRP (or “Grip”) helping players move between the two strategies.

"We want players to have options, but we also want them to be terrified of every encounter as they get up close and personal with the enemies," Striking Distance CEO Glen Schofield said. "We think it’s one of the most intense, visceral, and terrifying combat systems we’ve experienced, and it’s amplified by some of the next-gen features on the PS5 – especially the incredible haptic feedback on the DualSense controller."

The game will also bring some new mechanics including the one called Mutations. The Callisto Protocol features several kinds of opponents with one of them being Biophage – the creatures with tentacles erupting out from their bodies. When their tentacles emerge, players will have a short period of time to shot them off and easily kill the enemy – otherwise, the virus contained in those tentacles will turn a Biophage into a more dangerous monster that becomes much stronger and harder to kill.
