Capcom has released its financial report for the sixth-month period ending September 30, showing continued growth in revenue and profit. The company's success can be attributed to strong sales from its back catalog as well as the successful release of Street Fighter 6.
In the first half of 2023, Capcom achieved net sales of ¥74.9 billion ($498 million), marking a significant 52.7% year-over-year increase. Operating income also saw a notable rise, climbing by 54.4% to ¥33.8 billion ($224.9 million). The Digital Contents division, primarily focused on video games, played a crucial role in Capcom's financial success, accounting for 81.7% of the total revenue. This division experienced impressive growth, with sales reaching ¥61.2 billion ($407 million), an increase of 70% year-over-year.
The successful launch of Street Fighter 6 and strong back catalog sales were major contributors to Capcom's growth. Physical copy sales saw a remarkable 179% year-over-year increase, reaching ¥12 billion ($79.7 million). However, digital sales remained the primary distribution channel, generating ¥47.6 billion ($316.5 million). Additionally, Capcom's mobile game segment witnessed a 36% year-over-year revenue increase, amounting to ¥1.5 billion ($9.9 million) in just six months. This growth was largely driven by the popularity of Monster Hunter Now, a new title developed by Niantic, the developer of Pokémon Go, which has already amassed over 10 million global downloads.
Looking ahead, Capcom expects further growth in the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. The company anticipates total net sales of ¥140 billion ($930 million), representing an 11% year-over-year increase, and operating income of ¥56 billion ($372.3 million), reflecting a 10% growth. Video game revenue is projected to reach ¥106.3 billion ($706.8 million), an 8% increase.
Capcom's game sales thrived, with 22.6 million units sold in the first half of the fiscal year, surpassing the previous year's 21.3 million. Overseas markets contributed 81.4% of these sales, while domestic sales in Japan reached 4.2 million units. Back catalog titles accounted for 77.9% of total sales, with new releases selling 5 million units.
Among the top-selling games in H1 FY23, Street Fighter 6 led with 2.47 million copies sold globally, followed by the Resident Evil 4 remake (1.66 million), MegaMan Battle Network Legacy Collection (1.42 million), Resident Evil 2 remake (1.18 million), and Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak (1.09 million). Notably, Resident Evil 4 has already achieved a remarkable lifetime sales figure of 5.45 million copies, while Resident Evil 2 and Monster Hunter Rise boast significant numbers of 13.1 million and 13.6 million units sold, respectively.
