Developers across the industry have faced significant challenges this year, as numerous major studios have undergone unfortunate rounds of layoffs in succession. CD Projekt Red, the developer behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, was not exempt from this trend and experienced a third round of layoffs in July, adding to the difficulties within a three-month span.
In response to these circumstances, CD Projekt Red employees have united to establish the Polish Gamedev Workers Union. They are actively encouraging all members of the Polish games industry to join the union, which aims to improve workplace and industry standards by leveraging legal avenues and amplifying the voices of the workers involved.
"We started talking about unionizing after the 2023 wave of layoffs when 9% of Reds (that is roughly 100 people) were let go. This event created a tremendous amount of stress and insecurity, affecting our mental health and leading to the creation of this union in response. Having a union means having more security, transparency, better protection, and a stronger voice in times of crisis," as stated on the union's website.

The union welcomes individuals from all professions within the gaming industry in Poland. It emphasizes that membership is open to not only game developers but also to professionals working in various other roles within the industry.
"Union membership is anonymous. Union members know each other (you will be visible on our discord server), but people outside the union have no means of learning that you joined. Instead, you yourself can choose to reveal your membership to anyone you want," as the union promised.
While there are no obligatory responsibilities for union members, the union kindly requests them to join internal communication channels and stay updated on announcements. PGWU also has regular meetings, and although attendance is not mandatory, active participation is encouraged. All forms of participation are voluntary and highly appreciated. Furthermore, as a member, you will have the opportunity to vote on significant decisions and engage in discussions concerning union policies. Your input and involvement in shaping the union's direction are valued.
