Chaos Corona 12 Is Out Now

This release introduces Chaos Vantage integration, revamped VFB, Corona Pattern improvements, Curved Decals, and more.

The latest version of Chaos Group's high-performance architectural visualization renderer is already here with some exciting updates and long-anticipated features finally available to users to help them create and explore beyond limits.

Now, Corona 12 supports scene export to Vantage. This integration empowers Corona users with active Vantage licenses to flexibly choose between CPU and GPU rendering workflows based on their hardware and project requirements, significantly accelerating scene exploration and rendering.

This is ideal for quick test renders or even final renders when photorealism is not required. You can switch back to Corona and render those scenes on the CPU for full realism by replicating the camera angles you discovered in Vantage. Below is a comparison of the same scene rendered with Vantage (left) and Corona (right):

Additionally, you can create animations in Vantage and enjoy the lightning-fast speed of GPU real-time rendering:

According to the developers, there's a second stage of Corona and Vantage integration expected in Corona 13 towards the end of the year that will enable a live link between the tools, allowing you to render animations created in 3ds Max and Cinema 4D in Vantage.

Another Corona 12 key feature is an improved version of  Virtual Frame Buffer with a new intuitive interface and many new options. Here's what you can do with VFB 2:

  • Drag and drop a Corona EXR (CXR) file into the VFB itself and immediately continue editing it, even without the original scene being loaded in 3ds Max or Cinema 4D
  • Easily compare images with different resolutions and aspect ratios using the new A/B comparison option
  • Enjoy a smoother workflow by having multiple LightMix elements where each one has its own settings and save different lighting setups in one image instead of having separate configuration files for each LightMix setup
  • Speed up the iteration process and save valuable processing time by deferring the calculation of bloom and glare until the end of the render
  • Use new Gamma, Lift, and Gain parameters for tone mapping
  • Manage improved history

With Curved Decals, you can perfectly bend labels to round or curved objects such as bottles and cups without any distortions. In addition, decals can now be bent around a second axis, allowing you to add decals to spherical objects like balls, balloons, and more.

Create new and incredibly realistic materials with the help of an improved Corona Pattern. Geometric objects can now be used to define the shape of the crop box, allowing artists to employ snapping tools to get the perfect pattern.

Enhance day-to-night transitions with even lower sun angles adding an extra layer of realism with updated Corona Sky. It also includes a new Density parameter: lower it to make your clouds from thin to invisible or raise it to make them dense and thunderously heavy.

Another great new feature in Corona 12 for 3ds Max is Scatter Instance Brush, providing full creative control over the scattering process with a tool to refine procedural instances.
