Check Out NetEase Games' Talks at GDC 2023

The company's speakers will discuss popular games such as Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, Life After, and Naraka: Bladepoint, highlighting the potential of machine learning in improving game development efficiency and offering insights on effectively managing and fostering gaming communities.

Chinese gaming giant NetEase has announced it will be attending this year's Game Developers Conference that takes place from March 20 to 24. During the event, the publisher's employees will give over 16 presentations covering a range of topics in the Core Concepts and Summits sessions.

During the conference, NetEase's speakers will discuss success stories from hit games like Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, Life After, and Naraka: Bladepoint, highlighting how machine learning can enhance game development efficiency. Additionally, they will explore the future of tabletop games and share insights on managing and cultivating gaming communities.

Over 20 experts from the Chinese company have been selected to present at the upcoming event. Here are some highlights from the NetEase lineup at GDC:


The Fantasy Westward Journey team will discuss the importance of product marketing in maintaining the franchise's relevance for over a decade. They will also explore how social media-based marketing strategies can be utilized to encourage players to keep returning to the game.


The Ace Racer team will provide a detailed explanation of how they were able to achieve a seamless 90 FPS experience while maintaining high-quality, realistic graphic effects that have been verified online. Additionally, they will discuss their experiences in balancing visual art and performance from various perspectives, including pipeline rendering, vehicle scene optimization, and optimization process ideas.


Xinwei Chang, senior UX researcher at ThunderFire, will be discussing the research team's findings on consumer choice and quantifying the abstract beauty behind a character's skin in Naraka: Bladepoint. The game offers players a vast selection of skins for their characters, and by analyzing aesthetic preferences, the research team was able to identify regular patterns that will be shared during the conference.


NetEase Games' game engine programmer Wenhui Tao will present an efficient software occlusion culling (SOC) solution that enhances game performance by achieving a high culling rate at a low cost. This session will cover the challenges associated with culling and how to address them, including organizing data, implementing a runtime culling algorithm, and generating high-quality occlusion meshes as well as allow attendees gain insights into optimizing game performance through effective culling techniques.


Qingfeng Zeng, game lead artist at NetEase Games, will delve into the development of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened and share insights into the process of building the hand-painted stylized art pipeline. During the session, attendees will learn how the team implemented stylized character and scene assets and worked on special effects and action production, character and scene shader design, and related custom stylized render pipeline.
