The actor made a sharp remark, likely alluding to Guillermo del Toro's filmmaking approach, which favors practical effects.
During the Venice Film Festival press conference dedicated to the upcoming movie Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro, the film's actor, Christoph Waltz, offered a comment that drew the attention of the audience.
"CGI is for losers," Waltz said after the question about the film's practical effects. However, it wasn't clear what or who the actor was referring to and whether he implied specific titles, directors, or CGI creators, as he didn't say anything more on the topic. Most likely, given del Toro's preference for practical effects over computer technology, the actor was echoing that filmmaking approach.
Oscar Isaac, starring in the film as Victor Frankenstein, made a more extensive comment (via Hollywood Reporter) on the practical effects-oriented approach, drawing attention to the symbolism and thought put by del Toro in cinematic production: "There's so much symbolism in the way that it's constructed, where the circles are placed, the archetypal nature of like, for instance, when Victor is in his father's room again, many years later, everything's oversized, as if he's a child again."

The director himself also shared a comment on his cinematic methodology, noting that he's not against CGI but prefers to apply it wisely. Del Toro made a thoughtful statement, pointing out that what matters is how resources are used: "As a filmmaker, there's no bad resource. There's only badly used resources. We have digital effects, but you only do it when the limit of the physical has been not an easy solution. The more experience you have with the tools, the more you know how to do finer work with them."
Frankenstein, coming to big screens in a limited theatrical release in October and globally on Netflix in November, is a gothic sci-fi horror movie, based on the renowned eponymous novel by Mary Shelley. The movie tells a story of a talented but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a horrific experiment, which eventually leads to a resentful outcome. The film features Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, Christoph Waltz as Henrich Harlander, Victor's patron, and Felix Kammerer as William Frankenstein.
