Classic Beat 'Em Up Title Streets of Rage Will Reportedly Get Film Adaptation

A Streets of Rage movie adaptation is reportedly in the works with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad being in charge of the script.

According to the recent report from Deadline, the classic beat 'em up game, Streets of Rage, will be coming to big screens. The upcoming video game adaptation will reportedly be produced by Sonic the Hedgehog producer dj2 Entertainment along with Escape Artists known for its Equalizer franchise. John Wick creator Derek Kolstad is said to be a scriptwriter for the spec.

Streets of Rage was first released on SEGA Genesis back in 1991 followed by Streets of Rage 2 and 3 launching in 1992 and 1994. The story of the video game franchise follows two former police officers who take to the streets to fight a crime syndicate.

In 2020, 26 years after the release of the third Streets of Rage game, the franchise finally got its long-awaited follow-up that was released for PC as well as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and sold more than 2.5 million copies. The Streets of Rage series is often considered a classic title and its original trilogy still has an enthusiastic fanbase.

Streets of Rage will be the latest video game adaptation produced by dj2 Entertainment. The company's previous adaptation, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, showed an outstanding box office performance earning $72 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office this month. dj2 signed an overall deal with Amazon earlier this year and will also produce The Game Awards winner It Takes Two adaptation for film and TV.
