"We won't close off any possibilities."
Thanks to the successful releases of Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, Capcom decided to let some of its "dormant" properties be revived. That's how we get a chance to have a sequel for the beloved action-adventure game Okami more than 18 years after the original game was released. The sequel will be developed by Clovers Studio, led by the original director, Hideki Kamiya, who is also the game director behind Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2, and the Bayonetta series.
Last December, Kamiya founded the new studio along with Kento Koyama, a former PlatinumGames colleague. Speaking about the future plan in a recent interview with Japanese outlet GameSpark (spotted by VGC), Kamiya and Kento Koyama emphasized that Clovers Studio remains open to all possibilities when it comes to future projects. "Basically, I don’t think that we limited the methods we use in our approach to our policy of creating interesting games," he said.
Currently, the studio is focusing solely on the sequel. Kamiya has expressed gratitude for the attention to the team with the project's fame. However, he also clarifies that this doesn't mean it'll be restricted to working with existing IPs or a spiritual successor; instead, brand-new IPs would be considered for sure. "So I think it’s appropriate to say we won’t close off any possibilities – in the end, it all comes down to whether or not we get a 'wow' feeling from it," he concluded.
Announced during last year's TGA, the sequel, whose title has not yet been revealed, is being developed with Capcom's RE Engine and will continue the story of Amaterasu and company with more action and character development.
