Details on Apple Vision Pro's Approach To VR Playspace Boundaries

The new headset creates a 3×3 meter boundary centered on your head.

Vision Pro is said to take a different approach to playspace boundaries in VR compared to other headsets available on the market. Apple, the company getting ready to launch the headset, uses the term "fully immersive experiences" for VR apps on visionOS saying that those apps will show entirely virtual content instead of any of the real world.

Apple's documentation for the new headset says that when you launch a VR app running on visionOS, it creates a 3×3 meter boundary centered on your head. If a user moves out of that zone, the VR app "stops" and a user sees a real-world passthrough instead.

Unlike, the Apple headset, Meta Quest, Pico 4, and HTC Vive XR Elite also fade to real-world passthrough as you exit the boundary, but a user manually draws out the boundary so it's not a fixed 3×3 meter zone.

Other built-in safety measures discussed in the documentation:

  • If a person moves more than about a meter, the system automatically makes all displayed content translucent to help them navigate their surroundings.
  • When a fully immersive experience starts, the system defines an invisible zone that extends 1.5 meters from the initial position of the wearer’s head. If their head moves outside of that zone, the experience automatically stops and passthrough returns to help people avoid colliding with objects in their physical surroundings.
  • The system can stop an immersive experience when people get too close to a physical object or when they move too quickly.
