DirectStorage API Now Available for Developers on PC

DirectStorage will reduce load times and make games more detailed and expansive.

Microsoft launched its DirectStorage API for game developers. The technology reduces load times, like in Xbox Series X, and makes games more expansive and detailed.

DirectStorage allows your PC to stream huge amounts of data from an NVMe SSD directly to your GPU, performing multiple IO operations at the same time.

"This public SDK release begins a new era of fast load times and detailed worlds in PC games by allowing developers to more fully utilize the speed of the latest storage devices," said Microsoft in its blog.

DirectStorage will work on Windows 10 and 11, although the company said the latter is the "recommended path for gaming." It is available on any kind of storage device, but Microsoft says an NVMe SSD will maximize your IO performance and make you enjoy all the benefits of the technology.

Currently, there is no game you can test it on as the first game using the tech was supposed to be Forspoken, which was delayed until October, but the company might share some information at the upcoming GDC on March 23, where Luminous Productions will talk about DirectStorage integration in the game.
