Marking yet another milestone.
We all know that nearly every computing device ever made can run DOOM. With the launch of Quandoom, a new DOOM port for quantum computers using 72,376 qubits and 80 million gates, these machines can now be added to the roster of DOOM-compatible devices (and get their first practical use). However, there's a catch: no quantum computer currently exists that can actually execute this code.
Still, Quandoom's developer, Barcelona ICFO-based Quantum Information PhD student Luke Mortimer known as Lumorti, promises that you can efficiently simulate it on a home PC, even a laptop, using a lightweight QASM simulator. Quandoom is capable of running at 10-20 FPS and doesn't have all the features from the original game. More specifically:
- Currently includes the first level, more could be added;
- Everything is "X-ray" due to "reversibility shenanigans";
- No color;
- No music/sound;
- No level secrets;
- Enemies can't travel between rooms;
- No automap;
- Imp Fireball is a hitscan rather than a projectile;
- Minor tweaks regarding armor/health/damage to make it more reversible-friendly.
Quandoom
Luke Mortimer is continuing to work on Quandoom but admits that he is getting bored with the project, and if there is enough interest in the source code, he would consider making it available.
