DreamWorks' MoonRay Renderer Goes Open-Source

The renderer includes an extensive library of production-tested, physically based materials, a USD Hydra render delegate, and cloud rendering via the Arras distributed computation framework.

Following its promise made back in August 2022 and the subsequent release of an in-depth FAQ, DreamWorks Animation has finally open-sourced MoonRay, the company's in-house production renderer used in such works as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Bad Guys, and the fan-favorite Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

For those unaware, MoonRay was made as a replacement for Moonlight, the studio's old rasterization renderer, and can generate both stylized and photorealistic results. Now open-sourced, the renderer includes an extensive library of production-tested, physically based materials, a USD Hydra render delegate, multi-machine, and cloud rendering via the Arras distributed computation framework.

You can learn more about MoonRay here and download its source code over here. Also, don't forget to join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
