Enthusiasts 3D Scanned California's Largest Abandoned Silver Mine

Once the largest silver and lead producer in the country, Cerro Gordo is now a privately owned mining town situated in Owens Valley near Lone Pine, California. Visitors can explore the original buildings and artifacts, which have been preserved by Jon Bier and Brent Underwood, well-known for his YouTube channel, Ghost Town Living, where he documents the restoration of this historic site that has been abandoned for over a century.

Brent Underwood's latest project involved 3D scanning the Union Mine, once California's largest silver mine, offering a fresh perspective on this place and generating amazing data that will enhance our understanding of this mine and provide valuable information for future generations to build upon.

To ensure the digital preservation of mines that collapse every day, a group of enthusiasts, in collaboration with Bishop's University in Quebec, utilized a 1960s USGS report and cutting-edge technology to document the landscape and underground features on site. According to Brent Underwood, the process revealed many new findings about this historic mine and will lead to many new explorations.
