Epic Games Joins The Open 3D Foundation

Unreal Engine's developer joins O3DF as a Premier member to further O3DE's interoperability and portability of real-time 3D assets.

The Open 3D Foundation, the developers of an open-source 3D development engine Open 3D Engine (O3DE), announced that Epic Games, the developers of Unreal Engine, joined O3DF as a Premier member, alongside such companies as Adobe, Amazon Web Services, Huawei, Intel, LightSpeed Studios, Microsoft, and Niantic.

According to the announcement, the decision to join O3DF was dictated by Epic's commitment to further Open 3D Engine's interoperability and portability of assets, visuals, and media scripting, thus greatly simplifying the working processes of artists and developers and removing barriers in their choice of tools.

On top of that, VP of Unreal Engine Ecosystem at Epic Games Marc Petit will join the O3DF’s Governing Board to share what Epic has learned over 30 years in the industry to help shape the Foundation’s strategic direction and curation of 3D visualization and simulation projects.

"The metaverse will require companies to work together to advance open standards and open source tools, and we believe the Open 3D Foundation will play an important role in this journey," commented Marc Petit. "With shared standards for interoperability, we’re giving creators more freedom and flexibility to build interactive 3D content using the tools they’re most comfortable with, and to bring those amazing experiences to life in Unreal Engine and across other 3D engines."
