Playing video games is officially honorable and prestigious now that esports is part of the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia joined forces to hold the first real Olympic Esports Games in 2025.
As reported by PC Gamer, this should be a regular occurrence over the course of 12 years.
"By partnering with the Saudi NOC we have also ensured that the Olympic values are respected, in particular, with regard to the game titles on the programme, the promotion of gender equality and engagement with the young audience, which is embracing esports," said Thomas Bach, the President of the IOC (via Insider Gaming.)
The IOC has been thinking of introducing esports for some time and even held the Olympic Esports Series last year, but the issue is the event didn't have what most people consider esports. It tested participants' archery skills in Tic Tac Bow, baseball mastery in WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros, dancing abilities in Just Dance, and so on. At least there was Gran Turismo 7 present, but the whole thing left much to be desired.
Hopefully, this time the organizers will choose a different approach to picking games to challenge players and we'll see a new entertaining event celebrating video games.
