F3D: Free Minimalist 3D Viewer

The tool is created by Michael Migliore and Mathieu Westphal.

If you need to take a look at a 3D model easily and quickly, try F3D – a free minimalist 3D viewer developed by Michael Migliore and Mathieu Westphal.

It supports many file formats, including glTF, STL, STEP, PLY, OBJ, FBX, and Alembic, can show animations, provide thumbnails, and has many rendering and texturing options, like real-time physically based rendering and ray tracing.

It also contains the libf3d, a library to help you render meshes, with C++ and Python bindings and experimental Java and JavaScript bindings.

The 2.0 version adds the option to set the position of the F3D window as well as the ability to change light intensity. Here are some other changes:

  • Improved fish and zsh completion
  • Added a new interaction to center the camera on the point under the cursor using the middle mouse button
  • Added HDRi caching for improved performance
  • Added scene bounding box to the dump interaction
  • Reworked lighting for full-scene format files
  • Improved grid rendering and customization greatly with new options
  • Improved HDRi blur performance and customization
  • Added support for reading config file directory instead of a single file
  • Changed config file location on Windows
  • PostFX option names have been changed
  • Added an interaction (down arrow) to load all files from the directory containing the current file
  • Added an option to load multiple default scene files into a single render window
