Foundry Announced The End Of Modo Development

The 3D modeling software will be discontinued following the release of Modo 17.1 later this year.

Foundry, the developer behind various popular creative software for the media and entertainment industries, including Nuke, Mari, Katana, and others, has announced its decision to wind down the development of its 3D modeling, rendering, and animation software, Modo.

The company explained this decision as strategic, allowing Foundry to "focus on its core offerings and invest in new solutions that meet the evolving needs of the media and entertainment community". Modo's product downloads, docs, learning content, and support knowledge base will be available until November 2025, after which they will be retired. The Modo forums will be available until December 2024.

Following the release of Modo 17 this spring, Modo 17.1, scheduled for later this year, will be the final update to the software. According to Foundry, Modo may continue functioning on future operating systems, however, no further patches or updates will be issued to resolve potential conflicts.

As a result, it's highly recommended that customers transition to alternative 3D workflows as soon as possible. Customers on maintenance or subscription will receive support until their current contract term expires and can obtain an extended 10-year license so that they can continue to use Modo in the future.

An email has been sent to all active customers explaining how to obtain an extended license that can be transferred between machines as needed. Inactive customers, or those who did not receive this email, can request a license transfer here.
