Free Flora Houdini Tools from SideFX's Project Pegasus Tech Demo

Learn how to work with them in an in-depth tutorial.

In November SideFX released its impressive in-house tech demo called Project Pegasus to show how Houdini can be used together with Unreal Engine 5 to create 3D environments. Now, you can not only admire the project but also use some of its workflows in your scenes as the company has started releasing its custom tools for free.

The first tools in what will most likely be a series, as it was with Project Titan, the previous tech demo by the studio, are going to help you make and adjust flora in Houdini. It is "a set of prototype tools designed to model foliage in a natural and realistic way."

As you might have guessed from the description, the tools are still "in very early development," so don't expect them to always work perfectly. Nonetheless, it's a great aid in your vegetation-making journey. To show users how to use the Flora tools, SideFX has released a 2-hour tutorial, covering the basics, controls, functions, and examples.

You can find both the tutorial and the Flora files here. If you wish to know more about the development process, check out our interview with CG Supervisor Ian Smith

Apart from this demo, SideFX also launched Houdini 20 in November, a long-awaited update to its procedural 3D software. You can see how its tools can be used for water simulations in this article.
