George R.R. Martin on What He'd Change about Game of Thrones Books

"I'd have them finished."

George R.R. Martin is famous for his Song of Ice and Fire series and the fact he's taking forever to complete it. He started working on the next book, The Winds of Winter, in 2010 or even earlier, but we still don't know when it will be out.

But what about the existing novels? At the Oxford Writers' House, Martin was asked what he'd change about his books, and he voiced what every fan was thinking.

"I don't know, I could probably change more than one thing," he said. "If I could change one thing about one of my books, I'd have them finished."

He then said that he envied authors who self-publish their books and have the freedom of not worrying about deadlines. He would love to have had them finished, "that's the big thing I think I would change." Unfortunately, Martin has been struggling with The Winds of Winter. The last we heard about it from his blog was when he confirmed he was not done with it in July. "When WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement… where and when I cannot say."

If you miss his stories, go watch House of the Dragon and revisit Game of Thrones before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO's show starring Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell, comes out in 2025.
