Laura Chan shared a tutorial for non-physical HDRI lighting, which explains the working process behind lighting in UE5 Lumen.
Laura Chan – Associate Lighting Artist at Sledgehammer Games – published a tutorial for basic non-physical HDRI Lighting in UE5 Lumen. The tutorial is meant for intermediate-level users and shows the lighting pipeline using HDRI.
The artist says that using HDRI might be better if you are creating a realistic-looking game, while stylized games may benefit from using custom shaders. Chan emphasizes that lighting pipelines can vary and aims to help the readers adapt the tutorial to their needs.
The tutorial is designed for Unreal Engine 5's Lumen:
"Lumen is Unreal Engine 5's new fully dynamic global illumination and reflections system that is designed for next-generation consoles. It renders diffuse interreflection with infinite bounces and indirect specular reflections in large, detailed environments at scales ranging from millimeters to kilometers."
However, the author says that you can use the tutorial in Unreal Engine 4, although it will require compiling time.
To successfully follow the tutorial, you will need:
- NVIDIA RTX-2000 series and higher or AMD RX 6000 series and higher
- Windows 10 with DirectX 12
- PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S/X to run the build
