Ghibli's Spirited Away-Inspired Stop-Motion Blender Animation

Matt Clark has experimented with recreating some of his 3ds Max work in Blender.

Matt Clark, the developer of Wrapit for 3ds Max, has begun learning Blender and shared a recreation of his Baby Boh stop-motion animation inspired by a scene from Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.

In the original version, each frame of the animation was a separate subtool, allowing Matt to use solo mode and the up/down arrow keys to flip between frames while sculpting. He then brought the models into 3ds Max, preserving the polypaint as vertex colors. A custom MAXScript was created to dynamically hide/unhide each model for timeline scrubbing, and the final render was done using V-Ray.

As for the Blender version, the artist used object replacement via animated visibility and chose to avoid add-ons, as his goal was to learn the basics. If you want to create stop-motion animations in Blender by animating mesh objects frame-by-frame, check out Pablo Dobarro's affordable and popular add-on, Keymesh:
