Good Reviews, Low Sales: A Rough Start for Blizzard Co-Founder's Publishing Company
Dreamhaven, the publishing company founded by Mike Morhaime, is not doing so great.
Moonshot Games, Wildgate
"Our monthly expenses are outpacing revenue," Morhaime said. He added that the company is now "urgently reducing costs," but they are "committed to Dreamhaven surviving through this."
Wildgate, a multiplayer shooter, sold only 130,000 copies, and Sunderfolk, a turn-based tactical RPG released in April, sold just 62,000 copies. On launch, Wildgate peaked at nearly 8,000 concurrent Steam players, but then, just a month later, its daily player count dropped below 2,000. As for Sunderfolk, it never reached even 1,000 concurrent players at launch. The project received positive player reviews.
Another team, founded by other Blizzard veterans, also acknowledged that sales of their game were significantly below expectations – Frost Giant Studios Inc. and its game Stormgate, released in August, are going through rough times.
"Stormgate had a smooth launch last week, and the critical reception has been positive. That said, Stormgate is not getting the concurrency or sales that I hoped for," wrote Tim Morten, Production Director & CEO at Frost Giant Studios, Inc. "As the CEO of Frost Giant, that is my responsibility. I’m constantly trying to learn how to do better, and when I've had some time to digest, I will share my thoughts and opinions."
