The company promises to refund all Stadia-related purchases.
Google announced that they are now officially shutting down Stadia, the company's consumer gaming service revealed all the way back in 2019. According to a new blog post shared by Phil Harrison, Stadia's VP and General Manager, the decision to pull the plug on Stadia was dictated by the fact that in two and a half years, the service hasn't gained a required user base and failed to meet Google's expectations.
The blog post also states that the company plans to refund all Stadia-related purchases, including all hardware purchases made through the Google Store and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store, by mid-January 2023. Players will continue to have access to their games library and play through January 18, 2023.
"For the Stadia team, building and supporting Stadia from the ground up has been fueled by the same passion for games that our players have," reads the blog post. "Many of the Stadia team members will be carrying this work forward in other parts of the company. We’re so grateful for the groundbreaking work of the team and we look forward to continuing to have an impact across the gaming and other industries using the foundational Stadia streaming technology."
