GTA Online on PC Finally Gets Anti-Cheat Software

However, Steam Deck players will only be able to play GTA 5 Story Mode.

Rockstar

The PC version of GTA Online has long been plagued by cheaters, and after nine years, Rockstar introduced anti-cheat software to the game.

In the recent title update, the video game company announced that GTA Online gets the BattlEye Anti-Cheat, a kernel anti-cheat software that can "detect and prohibit attempts to use cheating software accessing GTA Online servers, attempts to manipulate game protected code, and the sabotage of other players' experience," as explained by Rockstar. BattleEye has already been implemented in such games as Destiny 2, Fortnite, Arma 3, Rainbow Six Siege, Escape From Tarkov, and others.

The software would hardware-ban the players who were caught using mods, and they would be unable to play GTA Online on the same PC, even if they created other accounts. It is also noted that BattleEye requires kernel-level access, which is the highest level of access a program can obtain on a Windows PC. Potentially, it can pose risks if the program is ever compromised.

The novelty can be turned off in Story Mode. As for Steam Deck, BattlEye requires special tools to ensure its compatibility with the handheld, but it doesn't support BattlEye for GTA Online, so Steam Deck players can play Story Mode but not GTA Online.
