Helldivers 2's Dev Says Games "Have to Earn the Right to Monetize"

Replying to one of the comments on Twitter, Arrowhead's CEO Johan Pilestedt shared some thoughts on monetization, saying that "you have to earn" it.

Here's some context. A user on Twitter thanked the developers of Helldivers 2 for implementing "not predatory" microtransactions, as the game allows players to earn in-game premium currency through gameplay, without the need to spend real money.

Pilestedt noted that the team didn't want to make a game where you had to pay to win. He joked that only a revolver fits this principle. It doesn't have the best characteristics, but it looks great, so its owners will be able to win the "cool gun" competition.

"'You have to earn the right to monetize' – I truly believe that. If people want to support this title they have an option, but we are never forcing anyone to do so," wrote Pilestedt.

Pilestedt also shared that the game is close to hitting 1 million copies sold, and while it's still far from Palworld's results, it has been exceeding the developer's expectations.

Speaking of the developer's expectations, it seems that neither the creators nor the publisher thought that the game could show some impressive results. After the game was released, Helldivers 2 has been facing lots of server crushes as the number of players is way too big and it's rapidly growing.
