Helldivers 2's Dev Wants To Focus On Core Gameplay

"DLSS — cool tech, but not necessary."

With the recent skyrocketed popularity and increased attention from players, Helldivers 2, a third-person shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, keeps facing challenges and trying to push forward.

As previously reported, the most notorious Helldivers 2 issue was related to server overload, which was successfully resolved by increasing the servers' capacity with a series of consecutive updates from Arrowhead's CEO Johan Pilestedt on X/Twitter. However, this transparent and quick feedback response didn't save the team from criticism over the lack of the option to use DLSS/FSR upscaling.

Helldivers 2 isn't a very graphically-demanding game. The PC hardware requirements are quite modest and keep in mind that the game runs on an engine that's been discontinued since 2018. DLSS upscaling is a great tool for enhancing a game's performance, however, it pretty much is not the case where it's actually needed or at least doesn't need to be added right away.

When faced with criticism for releasing a game without "basic features" such as DLSS/FSR, Arrowhead's CEO replied by calling it "cool tech but not necessary" and went on to explain that he'd prefer to use the coding time to improve the game's fundamental gameplay.

Naturally, that was completely misinterpreted as if upscaling wouldn't be implemented at all.

To that, Johan Pilestedt answered shortly: "I only said "gameplay > cool tech".
