Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding has been praised for its top-notch narrative, stunning visuals, and atmospheric cutscenes, which, coupled with the performances of skilled actors such as Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux, bring players cinematic enjoyment during their playtime.
So, it's not surprising that some players have commented that the game has all the qualities of a good movie. It's a compliment Kojima wouldn't deny, but when talking with Variety, he emphasized that the core of his works is still about games. "My work is often regarded as being similar to a movie, but at the core, games are what I create," he said.
The renowned Japanese director has an ambitious plan for this new intellectual property, which has attracted over 16 million fans by the end of 2023. Its sequel is set to be released sometime next year; also, several Death Stranding adaptation projects are underway, including a movie adaptation, which has been in the works together with movie production and distribution company A24.
When talking about the movie adaptation, Kojima, who takes part in the project in "a supervisory role," expressed his vision:
“I aim to present a new dimension of cinematic adaptation that goes beyond merely turning a game into a live-action movie.”
