"Holy F*ck" Is What the Studio Said After Reading the Avatar 4 Script

James Cameron says the fourth Avatar movie "goes nuts in a good way."

James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the original 2009's Avatar, is coming to the big screens in just a couple of days. The director already told the audience about new cameras, AI, and special algorithms used in the movie and shared that the film's production was "very fucking" expensive – so most likely the movie is set to be impressive, at least, from the visual side.

As for the story itself, we are yet to see whether it will live up to fans' expectations, however, Cameron himself notes that The Way of Water is just the beginning of the planned sequels and, according to the director, especially the story of the fourth movie is set to be something mindblowing.

Speaking to Collider, Cameron explained that the team had written the scripts for the second, third, fourth, and fifth Avatars in advance as he wanted all actors to know the entire plot so that they could immediately understand in what direction their characters would develop.

According to Cameron, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings was his "model" as the entire team on Jackson's movie series had a clear understanding of where they were going. The only difference between The Lord of the Rings and Avatar production was that Peter Jackson's team always had the books they could refer to, so Cameron decided to make a similar move and create the story for the upcoming sequels long before the movies were shot.

"I felt I had to do the same thing [as Jackson did]. I had to play this as if the books already existed," Cameron said. "So the only way for us to do that was to write all the scripts and let the actors read all the scripts and see where their characters were going and what it all meant. Not that that’s actable in the moment, but I think it’s something that the actors could work into their preparation for their characters."

The director also shared that he hopes the series, especially the last two planned films – the fourth and fifth – will be really successful and said that the fourth film should somehow deceive the audience's expectations noting that the script for the fourth part impressed even the film studio workers.

"I can’t tell you the details, but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a page of notes, so I was getting better," Cameron said. "When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, 'Holy fuck.' And I said, 'Well, where are the notes?' And she said, 'Those are the notes.' Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?"
