Dream big.
CD PROJEKT RED
As CD Projekt Red wraps up Cyberpunk 2077 and shifts the majority of its staff to focus on the development of The Witcher 4, namely Polaris, Pawel Sasko, the associate game director on Cyberpunk 2 at CD Projekt Red, tells an inspiring story about Eero Varendi, now a senior quest designer working on Polaris, who used to be a beetroot farmer.
It all started about seven or eight years ago when a YouTube video caught Sasko’s attention. The video was about The Witcher 1's prologue in The Witcher 3, made possible via amazing mods. Sasko told Flow Games in an interview (spotted by Games Radar+) his reaction at that time:
"'Damn this is such high quality work, so I asked [CDPR narrative director Philipp Weber], who is a modder, 'do you know this guy in the community?' and he said, 'yeah, I know who he is," [and I said] message him and tell him to send us his CV.' He sent me the CV and we did the test, the test was wonderful. He was great. He did great design test."

After they successfully built a connection at that time, they had some conversations, through which Sasko got to know more about Varendi.
"He was I think 20 or 21, and he was at this time in Australia, and he was collecting beetroot with a huge combine, like those huge harvesters that are driving and collecting. That's what he was doing, and he was modding in the evenings. So I got him from Australia to Poland.”
Since then, Varendi has moved to CDPR’s headquarters in Warsaw, shifting his work from farmland in the southern hemisphere to the Continent. “He's obsessed with Witcher.” That’s what Sasko says about Varendi’s love and passion for the game.
