The company plans to focus on the production of processors instead.
Intel decided to cancel one of their projects to focus on their core chip business. The company stated that it is "winding down" the RealSense cameras and redirecting computer vision talent and technology to work on the production of processors, the company's bread and butter.
For those who didn't know, Intel RealSense is one of the most comprehensive computer vision portfolios on the market. It is powered by AI, offers the widest range of visual technologies from LiDAR, stereo depth, and standalone SLAM to facial authentication, and is supported by their open-source SDKs. Despite all the advantages of the system, there were too few customers buying significant quantities of RealSense cameras, and this was probably one of the reasons why the production was shut down.
“We are winding down our RealSense business and transitioning our computer vision talent, technology, and products to focus on advancing innovative technologies that better support our core businesses and IDM 2.0 strategy,” Intel's spokesperson told CRN. “We will continue to meet our commitments to our current customers and are working with our employees and customers to ensure a smooth transition.”
