Intel alleges that a former employee stole around 18,000 files containing confidential data and has filed a lawsuit seeking $250,000 in damages.
According to the court filing, the employee whom Intel accuses of the unlawful actions was the company's staff member for 11 years and was let go in July: notified on July 7 and left Intel on July 31. He held an engineering position with access to confidential information, including Top Secret information.
The filing further reads that shortly after the notification about the termination, on July 23, the worker tried to download the company's data from his Intel laptop, but the attempt was blocked by Intel's Data Loss Prevention controls. Then, between July 28 and July 31, the worker, using a different technology, allegedly downloaded and transferred approximately "18,000 files from his Intel accounts and laptop, many of which were Intel Top Secret or contained Intel Confidential Information."
Intel then tried to contact the employee by phone, email, and letter, but he refused to respond. Thus, the chipmaker company seeks to take measures to protect its data and recover at least $250,000 "for compensatory damages, lost profits, unjust enrichment, and restitution."
The reason why the accused employee was let go isn't specified. Before, there was news that Intel was planning to dismiss a fifth of its factory workers and lay off over 15,000 employees, with the aim of cutting expenditure and raising business efficiency.
