The new partnership is set to help MediaTek build a more balanced and strong supply chain.
Intel and the Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek announced they have partnered to manufacture chips using Intel Foundry Services’ (IFS) process technologies. According to the companies, this new partnership is set to help MediaTek build a more balanced and strong supply chain.
Using Intel process technologies, MediaTek plans to manufacture a number of chips for a range of devices. Financial details and production volumes are not disclosed, it is only known that the chips will be produced over the next one and a half to two years.
"As one of the world’s leading fabless chip designers powering more than 2 billion devices a year, MediaTek is a terrific partner for IFS as we enter our next phase of growth," IFS President Randhir Thakur commented on the partnership. "We have the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically diverse capacity to help MediaTek deliver the next billion connected devices across a range of applications.”
Corporate senior VP of Platform Technology & Manufacturing Operations at MediaTek NS Tsai added: "With its commitment to major capacity expansions, IFS provides value to MediaTek as we seek to create a more diversified supply chain. We look forward to building a long-term partnership to serve the fast-growing demand for our products from customers across the globe."
Last year, Intel also announced that it would start producing chips for Qualcomm and Amazon's AWS. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has repeatedly noted the importance of developing the manufacturing direction sharing the company's plans to invest up to $44 billion in building new factories in the United States, Ireland, and Israel, setting a goal to bypass TSMC and Samsung in the market share by 2025.
