In an interview with IGN, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon shared how NetherRealm's famed fighting game franchise evolved becoming a pop culture phenomenon, and teased a new tittle the studio's currently working on.
Talking to IGN, Mortal Combat creator Ed Boon who was recently inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. awards spoke about his role in a team, shared how Mortal Kombat evolved becoming a pop culture phenomenon, and teased a new title NetherRealm is currently working on.
Ed Boon started his work on the studio's iconic title as a lead programmer. Now, he said, he's acting more as a creative director and Chief Creative Officer. Currently, the team has a number of great programmers who, as Boon claims, "can run circles" around him. However, bigger teams with various specialized disciplines that work closely with each other, need better coordination to improve interaction, so now, Boon describes his role as of a person who gets "some synergy with the team".
Speaking about the Mortal Kombat franchise, the programmer said that it is a "completely different beast right now than it was in 1992 when it first came out". He shared that creating the game in the 1990s was an absolutely different experience than it is now as the team got much bigger, the technology certainly developed, and it also takes much more time to create a game these days. "It's much a bigger production, but it's still a lot of fun," Boon said.
When Mortal Combat started to expand to different mediums like comic books, movies, and TV shows, NetherRealm realized that they created "something bigger than just a video game". Boom says that it's already been long enough since the studio got used to the fact that the title became "kind of like Marvel". "We're very proud of that. The fact that we've been around 30 years, and they're still going on, it's a really good sign that something’s been done right", shared Boon smiling.
When Boon was asked about what’s next for NeatherRealm, he said: "We certainly working on another game. Unfortunately, right now we're not at liberty to talk about it." However, he mentioned that the studio is "intensely working on it" and feels excited about the new title.
