"007 is under development, it's looking very cool," commented the developer.
In November 2020, Hitman developer IO Interactive shared a short teaser trailer, officially announcing that they are working on Project 007, an upcoming James Bond game set to tell the origin story of the legendary agent.
Since that time, we've received limited information about the game, apart from occasional speculations and job listings on IO Interactive's website, indicating their search for "elite talent" to join the Project 007 development team. The game's status has remained uncertain, with the only confirmed detail being that it hasn't been scrapped.
Recently, a brief update regarding the game's progress and additional insights into its storyline emerged from an interview conducted by Gamereactor with Álvaro Fernández, IOI's Core Engine Programmer, and Cris Vega, Senior Technical Executive Producer.
Speaking about the studio's games, Vega disclosed that "007 is under development" and it is "looking very cool". This once again confirmed that IO Interactive is actively working on the project and that it hasn't been abandoned.
Furthermore, the developer stated that the game delves into the story of "the first Bond and how [he] becomes the secret agent that he is". Since English isn't Vega's native language, and various actors have portrayed the agent over time, there's presently room for debate about who IO Interactive considers to be "the first Bond."
Unfortunately, the developer didn't comment on the game's release date. For now, the only speculation regarding the release window for Project 007 comes from IOI's 2022 financial report, which suggested that the releases of the studio's new projects, including Project 007, shouldn't be expected at least until 2025.
Last month, the studio also announced the opening of IOI Brighton, a new studio in Brighton, United Kingdom, making it the fifth branch of the company. According to the announcement, the Brighton division will be focusing on Project 007 and Project Fantasy, an upcoming MMO.
