John Wick-Inspired Dragon's Breath Ammo VFX Made in EmberGen

Jason Key achieved the perfect combination of flame, embers, and smoke with his latest piece.

Out of the all scenes featured in the fourth chapter of the beloved John Wick series, there was one that really stood out to the audiences and is considered by many to be amongst the greatest fighting sequences in the history of cinema. I am, of course, referring to the legendary top-down shootout sequence, inspired by the 2019 indie shooter, The Hong Kong Massacre, which captivates the viewer with its impeccable choreography, masterful camera work, and the use of the Dragon's Breath ammunition that looks so flashy and visually striking, some to this day believe it was created for this movie specifically and doesn't exist in real life.

It seems that Jason Key, a seasoned VFX Artist and Evangelist at JangaFX, also appreciates the scene in question, with his latest project paying homage to John Wick 4's portrayal of the DB ammo.

Using EmberGen, JangaFX's volumetric fluid simulation tool designed for simulating, rendering, and exporting flipbooks, image sequences, and VDB volumes, Jason has recreated the Dragon's Breath VFX as part of a study project, showcasing the results in the demo embedded above. The artist's version of DB perfectly combines flames, embers, and smoke effects, showcasing not only Jason's immense talent but also EmberGen's versatile capabilities when it comes to simulating fire-related FX.

Previously, Jason also impressed us with his real-time 3D plane engine flameout simulation, also made using EmberGen:

Besides fire and smoke, EmberGen is also capable of simulation lots of other visual effects, including but not limited to water, clouds, and even space nebulae.
