The update introduces 3D Gaussian Splatting to Mesh 2.0 and KIRI Engine 3DGS Blender Addon V2.0.
KIRI Innovations has released KIRI Engine 3.12, a new and improved version of their flagship cross-platform 3D scanner app featuring 3D Gaussian Splatting to Mesh 2.0 and KIRI Engine 3DGS Blender Addon V2.0, along with a plethora of quality of life changes and improvements to the app's general capabilities.
The highlight of the update is the introduction of 3DGS to Mesh 2.0, the enhanced version of the original 3DGS to Mesh presented back in January. The updated Gaussian splat-to-mesh conversion now features advanced techniques for normal prediction and reflection removal, a capability inspired by professional 3D scanners, particularly the super-dense point cloud generation method.
With this improvement, the algorithm can now handle situations that were previously impossible for Gaussian splat-to-mesh reconstruction, such as scanning reflective and transparent surfaces, which would disrupt the process by providing inaccurate depth data. This update has been posted on GitHub, along with model viewers that highlight the differences between versions 1.0 and 2.0. The model viewers are synchronized in terms of camera position, ensuring the differences between the models are clearly visible.
The development team itself views 3DGS-to-Mesh 2.0 as an enormous technological advancement, noting its capability to generate high-fidelity models across various surface types as a "significant leap forward." At the moment, KIRI is the only company offering this technique, and they intend to open-source it in the near future.
Moreover, 3DGS now includes masking features that isolate the object from the background during the model generation process. According to the team, 3DGS Masking will be available for both traditional 3D Gaussian splats and the new 3DGS-to-Mesh production, where in both cases, users can obtain a clean model without background noise. This feature will be a toggle in the upload menu for both methods, allowing users to get the full scene with its background when turned off, or the isolated object by itself when turned on.
Another significant improvement is 3DGS Blender Addon getting upgraded to V2.0 and getting its capabilities expanded with the addition of the 'Modifiers - Edit' mode, featuring Camera Culling, Crop Boxes, Decimation, and Remove Artifacts modifiers, the 'Point Edit' mode for editing point clouds before importing the 3DGS object, which can be used to create an isolated object from a full scene, and the 'Modify - Animate' mode that allows the user to add several animation presets, such as noise displacements, to points transformation, to curves transformation, and pixelate transformation, in just a few clicks.
Other updates include:
Featureless Object Scan
- Mesh quality improvement
UI
- Changed the 'Include Mesh' from the 3DGS upload page to '3DGS to Mesh'
- After selecting '3DGS to Mesh,' there will be two files being generated: a Gaussian splat under the '3DGS' list and a mesh file based on the splat under the 'Scans' list.
