"There was not a lot to choose from."
Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, the creator of Baldur's Gate 3, recently admitted that if he wasn't able to develop a game based on the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe, the only other RPG licenses he would have considered were Fallout and Ultima.
Vincke, in a conversation with Edge 400 (via Games Radar+), revealed the limited choices he felt he had when aiming to elevate Larian on the industry stage. He stated, "It would have been Ultima, it would have been Fallout, it would have been Baldur's Gate. There was not a lot to choose from."

Even though Larian never managed to work on the Bethesda franchise, they found the D&D setting of the Sword Coast to be a rich canvas for the studio's ambitions.
Since the original developer, Black Isle Studios, closed down, the highly-regarded Baldur's Gate license has been unused and in the possession of the D&D publisher, Wizards of the Coast. Vincke highlighted the popularity of the IP, and he also recognized the need for a triple-A approach to overcome the studio's constraints:
"It's one of those IPs that you know a lot of people will want to work on. So it would be great for attracting other people to the studio.
I felt like there was a glass ceiling that we wouldn't be able to break through unless we had triple-A production values, budget, marketing, all the triple A things."
