Learn How Autodesk Helped Restore Notre-Dame de Paris

The company's models made heritage preservation possible.

Notre-Dame de Paris suffered huge fire damages 5 years ago, in April of 2019. Several big companies swore to help restore it, and Autodesk was one of them.

The famous cathedral opened its doors again on December 7, and you can now see the hard work Autodesk poured into its restoration in its arches and windows, lovingly recreated first in 3D and then in real life.

Thanks to the company, a highly detailed digital model of Notre-Dame was created by combining existing scans with new laser surveys.

"This BIM [Building Information Modeling] model, along with Autodesk software, was provided free of charge to the public institution Rebâtir Notre-Dame and made available to construction site stakeholders via a technology and skills patronage agreement."

Autodesk and Art Graphique & Patrimoine (AGP), a company specializing in laser scanning and digitization of historic monuments, spent over a year creating the full-scale model, "designed using Autodesk technologies, requiring 12 laser scanners and a team of 7 engineers to scan the building and collect 46,000 images."

"We are humbled to have participated in the restoration and future preservation of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a truly magnificent architectural wonder of the world," said Nicolas Mangon, VP of AEC Strategy and Marketing.

Notre-Dame de Paris is not the only preservation project in Autodesk's portfolio: it has also done digitalization work for the Apollo 11 capsule, the 3,000-year-old medieval city of Volterra, and the USS Arizona site in Pearl Harbor.
