A few days ago, Game Developer and Tech Artist Sam Blye, also known as ompuco, attracted the attention of thousands of Twitter users by unveiling a jaw-dropping demo for a backrooms game prototype featuring a lossy datamoshing glitch effect.

Following the reveal and numerous requests from intrigued viewers, the creator has now shared an insightful breakdown, revealing how the effect was set up and detailing each step of the production process. According to the artist, everything is rendered in real-time in Unity using custom post-processing shaders and a personalized DXR setup. Furthermore, the developer has made the JPGPU and datamoshing path tracing build available on Patreon, enabling you to experiment with it yourself if you have a GPU that supports DXR.
