Learn How to Model Mystery Shack Diorama from Gravity Falls in This Course

Ian Worrel is ready to share his knowledge.

Do you remember this awesome Mystery Shack from Gravity Falls created by Art Director Ian Worrel? Now you have a chance to learn how to make one yourself.

IAMAG is offering a course where Worrel will walk you through the process in Blender, Gravity Sketch, Photoshop, and Substance 3D Painter.

This eight-part video tutorial demonstrates the process of hand-painting textures in Photoshop that are then applied to a 3D mesh using the projection mapping technique in Blender.

"While this diorama is 3D, it mainly operates as a 2D picture with limited camera motion. I like projection painting because I can lean on my 2D skillset with a bit of 3D dimensionality for added effect – I suppose one definition of 2.5D," said Worrel.

Some videos in the course are step-by-step process demos, and others show the creator talking over a time-lapse screen recording. The tutorial doesn't cover software navigation, so you should be familiar with where to find your tools.

The chapters include:

  1. Design and Blockout
  2. Modeling
  3. Layout and Animation
  4. Texturing and Lighting
  5. Rendering for Paint-Over
  6. Painting and Projection Texturing
  7. Scattering Cards and EFX
  8. Compositing

The full series is available for IAMAG members until September 13, 2024. Find it here and join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on InstagramTwitter, and LinkedIn, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
