Longtime PlayStation Architect Masayasu Ito To Retire After 36 Years At the Company

Masayasu Ito was the one who led engineering on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that Masayasu Ito, the longtime PlayStation hardware architect, is resigning as company representative director and deputy president.

The 60-year-old executive vice president will retire on October 1, after over 30 years at Sony. He joined the company in 1986 where he worked on in-car audio equipment later moving to the console division in 2000. During his career at PlayStation Group, Ito was responsible for the hardware engineering of the PSP and PS3. He also led engineering for the PlayStation 4 as well as contributed to bringing the PS4 Pro model to the market.

The PS4, as we know, obtained worldwide success with more than 117 million consoles sold, while the PS4 Pro marked the release of a more powerful console with improved graphics and compatibility while not making the generational leap of a totally new console platform.

In an interview with Famitsu given on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the PS4, Ito explained that the presence of 8 GB of RAM in the PS4 was not the initial plan and that it was necessary to reduce the costs of the console in other areas to meet what was the No.1 request from the developers.

Finally, Masayasu Ito was also the head of the hardware engineering team that designed the PlayStation 5. On the PlayStation Blog, Ito presented the new console to the public and talked about the challenges of developing the console during the pandemic.

As reported by Bloomberg, Ito's departure is due to reaching retirement age, and he will also resign from Sony Group as a whole.

Sony also revealed that Ito will be replaced by current director and deputy president Lin Tao. In addition, the company said that Kiichiro Urata who is currently serving as Sony’s head of Japan Asia partner development relations is to be appointed company director.
