Meta Created Supply Chain for Quest Pro's Lenses from Scratch

The company shared the details behind the headset's creation.

Meta has revealed the details of creating Quest Pro's pancake lenses, saying that the supply chain had to be made from scratch as there was no manufacturer that made the parts.

While not entirely new, the optics in the VR headset are "truly unique", containing a two-element lens and more than 10 layers of "functional optical films".

"We were among the first to work with tier 1 industrial partners to create a shortened optical stack and pancake optics like Meta Quest Pro’s – and we did it at scale."

Meta evaluated the full optical system’s resolution and looked closely at PPD – a metric that measures it, taking into account the display and optics together. It managed to increase the system resolution by 10% (22 PPD) compared to Quest 2 (20 PPD), which might not be the best result out there but it is definitely progress.

The team also worked on Quest Pro's sharpness and surpassed Quest 2 in this regard as well: the center sharpness is now 0.98 and edge sharpness is 0.85. To maximize contrast, the new high pixel density display has specialized local dimming technology, which results in 75% more contrast.

Meta concludes that its goal is to "maximize the holistic user experience" and combine Quest Pro’s pancake lenses and polarization optics with higher-resolution displays. Considering the effort the company poured into the lenses, we should expect to see them in Meta's future headsets.
