Microsoft Considers Buying Japanese Studios
The Xbox team plans to expand its reach in Japan.
It appears that Microsoft wants to expand its reach in Japan by acquiring studios in the area, Bloomberg states. A number of Japanese game developers, small and large, told Bloomberg that they have been contacted by Microsoft regarding potential offers. Talks were private, so little is known about the discussions.
Jeremy Hinton, head of Xbox operations in Asia, pointed out that the company is "always open to discussions with creators that are a good fit." Hinton said that there's a possibility here, but they are not ready to share details.
Microsoft has also been talking to Japanese developers about launching titles for the Xbox consoles. Microsoft, for example, talked to Koei Tecmo and company president Hisashi Koinuma, and they're considering launching more games on the Xbox.
During the Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show Showcase in September, Xbox head Phil Spencer said that Japan is Xbox’s fastest-growing market. Game Pass became available in Japan in April and they have seen "more players on Xbox devices, games, and services than at any time in our history in the market."
"We learn from the past," Spencer pointed out. "And this year, we’re scaling our global vision with the goal to launch our products in Japan at the same time as the rest of the world, including our new console, which will launch day and date with our global markets."
