Minecraft Sells Over 300 Million Copies

The legendary sandbox has solidified its position as the world's best-selling game.

During this year's Minecraft Live 2023, a recently-held annual live event dedicated to the renowned sandbox, Mojang provided an update on the game's sales numbers, revealing that Minecraft has surpassed a mind-boggling milestone of 300 million lifetime sales across all platforms.

The figure, up 62 million copies since the previous update shared by the studio back in 2021, reaffirmed Minecraft's position as the world's best-selling game, outperforming the runner-up, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V, by more than 100 million. Notably, this impressive figure also positions Minecraft as the seventh-best video game franchise, trailing behind FIFA by just 25 million copies.

"As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks," stated Helen Chiang, Head of Mojang Studios.

Additionally, during Minecraft Live 2023, Mojang announced the winner of this year's mob vote and unveiled the Trial Chambers, a new game world structure full of traps, mobs, loot, and a brand-new hostile mob – the Breeze – who attacks the player using wind. The sales update shared by Mojang also means that Microsoft now has two video game franchises that surpass 300 million units sold. The other one is Activision's Call of Duty series, which recently became Microsoft's property following the successful $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This acquisition, which concluded last Friday, marked the end of a 20-month legal battle with regulators and anti-monopoly committees.
