More Acquistions by Sony Interactive Entertainment Should Be Expected

Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO Jim Ryan commented on the recent purchase of Bungie saying that it will stay a multi-platform and independent studio. He also noted that we should expect more acquisitions.

On Monday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its intention to acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion. According to the blog post, the company will stay an "independent, multi-platform studio and publisher". In an interview with Games Industry, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan also announced that the acquisition won't be the last one of its kind.

It's worth noting that during the last few months Sony Interactive Entertainment has also acquired a number of companies including Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, Nixxes Software, and Firesprite. According to Ryan, the company will keep expanding acquiring other studios. "We should absolutely expect more," said the CEO, "We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go."

Jim Ryan also shared that the Bungie acquisition is in no way a response to the deals like Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard or Take-Two's intention to purchase Zynga. He said: "These conversations have been a number of months in gestation, and certainly pre-date the activity that we have seen this year". He added that the strategy to acquire more studios is what the company feels "right for PlayStation": "And what we feel is the right thing to do to drive PlayStation to places we've never been before," commented Ryan.

As for Bungie, Ryan noted that the company will keep publishing on different platforms including rival consoles. "I will personally be spending a lot of my time with Pete and the team at Bungie, helping make sure that everything beds down right and that autonomy means autonomy," said Ryan.
