NetEase Establishes a New Studio, GPTRACK50

The studio will be led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the producer behind the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry series, and its plans include creating original IPs for games and other media and distributing them worldwide.

Chinese game giant NetEase has announced the formation of a new development studio called GPTRACK50. According to the publisher, the new Osaka, Japan-based studio will focus on creating various entertainment content, including games, films, and entertainment series, that will "impress the whole world."

The studio will be led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi who joined NetEase in August. Prior to NetEase, the games industry veteran spent 27 years at Capcom where he worked as a producer on a number of the publisher's franchises including Resident Evil games, Devil May Cry, and Dragon's Dogma as well as was involved in game design, video editing, and script writing.

"I believe that NetEase Games, a company with extensive experience in investment and co-development, is a very reliable business partner in developing high quality games and entertainment projects," Kobayashi said. "With the support and respect from NetEase in understanding me and my team’s development achievements and values, I will build a stronger team with the goal of creating more original quality contents that will satisfy users around the world."

Speaking to IGN, the producer also hinted at what the studio's debut game would be saying that it will be in line with the action games he has previously worked on.

"After making action games at Capcom for so many years, it would be a bit weird if I was now making an adventure game or a dating sim, wouldn’t it?" he said.

"That being said, I don’t want to do the exact same thing as I have been doing at Capcom either. Mixing my expertise up with things that my new position at NetEase allows me to do should make for an interesting action game. While NetEase is known for mobile games and online gaming, I do have to say that I want to continue developing for the console and PC market."
